Champoluc – Mascognaz

In a few words, my favourite cyclistic itinerary, the one I use to do almost every summer afternoon, essentially because it's a steep road, which asks for constant efforts, and gives silence, concentration and lovely sight: you arrive at Antagnod's level, on the opposite side, and then you look the glacier. Now it has been rebuilt because several slumps erased it from maps, it has got a better bottom, perfect for a bike run.

I advice this itinerary to those who want to keep fit, or to those who want a little bit of space and silence: the ascent is hard enough to make you forget your usual problems, and it's almost all done in beautiful woods.

How can you find the road?

If you've ever gone to Antagnod, you'd surely have seen the double "Z" which characterise the mountain   right of Mascognaz: well, your itinerary is there. It starts from the so - called Pratone, in Varasc resort, after Amponey bridge over the torrent; you'll discover that the road has got a crossroads. Choose the one on the left, the one which goes up, because the other one will take you to Periasc, along Evancon Torrent.

It's a carriageable, so pay attention to trucks or jeeps moving: Mascognaz, in the last years, is under refurbishment, and so traffic got more intense. the run will be characterised by several hairpin bends; the first is long but not so hard, the second is shorter and the third is surely the hardest.

The last part isn't so difficult: when you've reached Notre Dame de la Grace's Chapel you have done it. just a last advice: when you'll arrive, you'll see that you are about 15 meters over the village. so you'll have to go down; choose the second descent, the one next to E. Fosson's plaque. You can't go wrong.

Mascognaz isn't a simple aim: it is a perfect refreshment point, thanks to its fantastic water, and to its meadows' beauty. After that, have fun! The "Pratone" always comes too early!
