Fiery

Little village located on the “glacier’s shoulder”, just over St. Jacques, Fiery stands at about 1900 meters over sea level. A little faraway, for those who come from valley floor, here’s Beau Bois resort, charaterised by the old hotel near the meadow. It’s reachable in less than 15 minutes from St. Jacques. Fiery isn’t directly visible for those who walk along no. 7 path towards Verra Plan. It’s on the left, and the crossroad is located at the wood’s end, before to reach the plan. The village has got a little church, and an historical guesthouse; there’d be a “little bar”, which however was under refurbishment during 2004 summer, despite an advertised opening on August.

It’s good to remember that this little village hosted the famous poet Guido Gozzano (1883 – 1916), exponent of “Crepuscolari”’s poetry, during 1906 and ’07 summers, at “Bella Vista Hotel”. On a hotel’s shutter he wrote the following verses:

E' tanto strano

Tra tante cose strane

Un coso su due gambe

Detto Guido Gozzano

Who wants to find any other details about his staying in the Valley, could read the exhaustive book “La Pietra e il Sogno”, by Roberto Taioli, Stylos editions, Turin 2004 (only in Italian, unfortunately). Anyway, from Fiery start numerous runs. First of all, the path 7 – 7A, which continues northwards in the wood, towards Verra Plan, Lago Blu and Mezzalama. Instead, behind the guesthouse, there’s the mysterious 6A’s beginning, which takes to Bivacco Città di Mariano, 2981 meters.
